It’s iconic: the I <3 NY t-shirt, a long-felt echo from a tourism campaign that was born in 1977 and has dominated souvenir stores ever since. It still works, too, in a way other tourist kitsch items don't: you can wear it with a grungy plaid skirt and jacket tied around the waist and wear it to fashion week. It fits right in.
