T R O C A D E R O.

Downtime. It’s nearing the end of Paris fashion week and it occurs to me that, in all my trips to Paris, I’ve never once been to the Trocadero… to that famous view where the Eiffel Tower looms impressively, where you can hold up your hand and pretend to pinch it between your fingers.

You have a few options here: you can shun the photo cliches and aim for some happy snaps that don’t make use of the Eiffel Tower, the colonnades, or the carousel that’s so picturesque it was practically built in anticipation of the invention of Instagram… Or you can grab some fairy floss and embrace it. And if your plan is to do the former, why on earth did you come here?
It’s just before the Paul & Joe show and I’m wearing an outfit from Iris & Ink’s new collection. The blue silk satin top is as vibrant as the mood is in this hive of excited tourists. The vinyl skirt and matching vinyl bomber jacket have equal potential to be modern rock chic or vintage rock’n'roll, all with a change in hairstyle. You can throw it around your shoulders when the afternoon settles in and you walk in the shade of the tree-lined Paris avenues. Or, anywhere for that matter.
Some things just feel right. On this particular day, ponytails and fairy floss and the Eiffel Tower making everything below it seem smaller are such things. Fashion weeks don’t afford a lot of time for sight seeing, so getting to feel like a tourist – for a few short hours at least – is somehow sweeter than actually being one.
